3 John 1:9-10

3 John 1:9 is part of this passage.
9I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t accept what we say. 10Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, he doesn’t receive the brothers himself, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.

Summary

The elder wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, rejects him; if the elder comes he will remember Diotrephes’ wicked words, refusal to receive brothers, blocking others, and casting them out of the church.

Interpretation

Diotrephes “loves to be first among them”—ambition diagnosed as the root. Primacy-love wrecks hospitality and apostolic partnership. Put the main claim into a single sentence you could pray with a child or a skeptic without embarrassment.

He does not receive the elder, spreads wicked nonsense, refuses brothers, stops those who would receive them, and expels them. Control stacks abuses: slander, closed doors, coercion, excommunication of the generous. Ask what repentance would look like before Sunday ends: a confession, a reconciliation, a gift, a boundary, or renewed Scripture intake.

The elder will “remember his deeds” when he comes—accountability visit, not passive gossip. Authority confronts pretension. Teach this unit so hearers meet both comfort and command; the gospel always does both.

3 John thus warns that anti-mission hospitality policy can be driven by ego more than doctrine—and still be wicked. Measure success not by novelty but by whether faith, hope, and love grow more durable under pressure.

Practice: examine leadership for first-place love; refuse to partner with Diotrephes patterns even when they claim to protect the church. Linger on the verbs and nouns the Spirit inspired; they carry the pastoral weight that slogans cannot.

Hold the center of this passage carefully: The elder wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, rejects him; if the elder comes he will remember Diotrephes’ wicked words, refusal to receive brothers, blocking others, and casting them out of the church. That claim must govern both comfort and confrontation.

In this unit, themes such as Pride, Authority, Hospitality refused, Slander, Church discipline abused press concrete obedience on the audience named for this unit. Name the pressure your church faces that matches this text—delay, deception, lovelessness, pride, or fear—and answer it from the passage itself.

Teach this passage so hearers meet the WEB wording itself, not only a paraphrase. Keep quotation and explanation close together. Refuse readings that flatters the flesh, softens Christ’s lordship, or turns grace into permission for darkness.
